It may only be a formality, but Wednesday’s re-election announcement by Mayor Mike Huether holds significant importance to a man who has held the seat the past four years.
“We will not stop at anything in terms of making sure that the people understand not only what we’ve accomplished over the last four years, but in my mind, more importantly, what are all those things we can do in the next four years,” Huether said.
Those plans include keeping the city safe by investing in law enforcement and also infrastructure. He also plans on making sure the city remains on an upswing in growth. He does understand that as Mayor, it is very difficult to please everyone.
“We weren’t going to agree on everything, we weren’t, but at least these folks that I’m serving, that I’m fighting for, they knew what I thought, why I’m using my head and my heart and my gut to make these decisions,” Huether said.
He says his experience leading the city during four major emergencies the past four years makes him the right person to lead if something else does happen.
Huether expects an intense campaign over the next two months, and he says he and his supporters are ready to get their shoes dirty to earn back a job that he considers a dream.
“To be able to fulfill it is something that you just can’t imagine, and I don’t want to let it go,” Huether said.
Sioux Falls City Council member Greg Jamison has also announced his intention to run for Mayor. The election will take place on April 8.
